Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2008.
The purpose of this dissertation is to discern the proper relationship between images and words and to consider the form that relationship should take in the life and liturgy of the church. This volume argues that the visual image represents a significant means by which human beings can and should serve the Lord God and one another as well. According to the understanding that images are to be employed for service, the use of images by the church must conform to the parameters and principles set forth in God's word.

The dissertation is written in five chapters. The first chapter introduces the major purposes of the work and articulates the essence of a servanthood model for image use. Image is defined for the purpose of this dissertation as a human artifact formed in such a way that it refers meaningfully to something else. In this chapter, the image is also compared and contrasted with the word on the basis of its nature and functionality.

Chapter two introduces biblical teaching regarding images, taking into account the most relevant passages from the canon. An initial section considers the faculty of sight in relation to God's written word and the significance of the Bible's teaching concerning the visible world. A subsequent section examines the major biblical terms and canonical themes relating to the image. Here it is suggested that the image understood broadly pervades the canon and that human images participate substantially in the cosmic struggle between godly and ungodly imagery.

Analysis of the OT yields the conclusion that a distinction between human images in general and idols in particular makes sense of what would otherwise appear to be a contradictory discussion. In light of this distinction, it is argued that the creation of images is best understood as one means by which human creatures respond to the Creator. Nonetheless, the OT emphatically prohibits direct visual representation of God and the use of images for the purpose of worshiping God. This suggests that among fallen creatures, idolatry represents a principal temptation for those who make and view images. Analysis of the NT confirms the essential OT teachings regarding human imagery, noting especially the Lord Jesus' attitude toward imagery. Of particular interest in the NT is the emergence of Christ as the Image of the Godhead, thus fulfilling any perceived lacuna stemming from the OT prohibition against images of God.

Chapter three surveys the interpretation of biblical data concerning images and image use throughout the history of the church. This historical survey is accomplished under four major headings: (1) images in patristic theology, (2) images in medieval theology, (3) images in reformation theology, and (4) images in the age of enlightenment and in subsequent eras.

Chapter four synthesizes the insights gained in the biblical and historical chapters and examines issues that relate to particular areas of doctrine. This chapter also expounds the notion of a servanthood model for the image, stressing the importance of conformity to the will of God as expressed in the word of God with a view to the needs of God's people. This chapter concludes by asserting that the proper use of images entails honoring the proscriptive boundaries set forth by God's word. To this it is added that a distinction must be made between the ways that images can be used and the ways they should be used in specific contexts.

The final chapter focuses on the practical application of principles and parameters deduced in prior chapters. The chapter's initial section articulates more precisely how the image should be involved in the life and liturgy of the church, particularly from the perspective of worship understood broadly and narrowly. A brief discussion follows in which it is suggested that the image represents a significant medium for the task of expressing and communicating the Christian worldview both within the church and to those outside the church. The dissertation concludes with a summary of its findings.
