This dissertation explores how two-dimensional visual images transfer information and interact with our visual mental imagery and memory, thereby allowing us to learn. Pictures have their own set of rules independent of linguistic analysis therefore, their structures and functions need to be explained in terms of their own vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. The prospect of a non-linguistic model of visual information has become possible as the understanding of information itself has become more comprehensive. This study devises a research-based model for message design based on principles derived from message design, cognitive psychology, neurology, and information theory. Findings from these four areas identify various principles applied in selecting and constructing pictures for instructional materials. A Model for Nonverbal Factors Impacting the Design of Visual Information may serve as a basis for future research on the ways in which visual images carry meaning. This model may also help identify analytic tools for the use of both the viewer and the message designer. Since the designer encodes the information in the appropriate form for the message design task, it is likely that he or she uses the same principles that the viewer needs to decode the information in the message.
