How does one become a hero who transcends time and continues to influence society long after his death? Nineteenth century writers, Lord Byron and Oscar Wilde seem to hold the answer to this question of heroic longevity. Over the past century, writers, directors, and musicians have looked to Byron and Wilde for inspiration, incorporating them into novels, films, and dramas. Scholars have analyzed the life and works of these two authors since their own lifetimes, but research remains to be done looking at how contemporary society envisions Byron and Wilde. This dissertation focuses on the representations of Byron and Wilde in biographies, historical biographical novels, films, plays, and music since 1967, the year in which the government of Great Britain revised the laws concerning homosexuality. All of the works emphasize their roles as cultural heroes in the postmodern world. Byron and Wilde are simultaneously and often paradoxically seen as timeless figures, as products and symbols of their own time, and as postmodern icons. This dissertation focuses on the major issues represented by Byron and Wilde, including gender, sexuality, celebrity, and nationalism. This dissertation examines to what extent Byron and Wilde have become canonized cultural heroes and to what extent they remain transgressive rebels.
