When the results of the field studies are coupled with those of the survey, it can be concluded that the distribution of S. sebiferum in the southeastern United States is patchy.

Plants are being considered as possible renewable energy sources. Due to its rapid growth, its regenerative ability, and the high oil content of its seeds, Sapium sebiferum might represent a potential energy source. Because of the disparity between what the literature states as to the location and the prevalence of the tree, coupled with the unfamiliarity with the tree by the people in the area where it was allegedly prevalent, this investigator performed a study of the distribution of S. sebiferum in the southeastern United States.

The investigation included a field study in South Carolina and a survey of the plant's distribution in the other southeastern states. Field studies revealed that the source of the tree's unfamiliarity was the use of a different common name in South Carolina from any reported in the literature at the beginning of this study, in 1983. The common name by which it is known is the "popcorn tree." Natural populations of S. sebiferum were found on Kiawah Island, in Mount Pleasant, and on Cat Island, all of which are at least 15 miles apart.

The survey revealed that, although trees were found in many of the coastal counties of the states surveyed, the distribution was not continuous. In Dixie County, Florida for example, which sits between Franklin and Citrus counties, zero trees were reported by the agricultural extension agent responding to the survey. Yet, in Citrus and Franklin counties, there were greater than 100 trees present, according to the agricultural extension agents in those counties.

Since S. sebiferum is potentially such an economically important species, with a history of folk usage, a study of its biological activity was undertaken. In addition to a determination of activity in the crude extract, sensitivity testing was performed at different stages of purification, and physico-chemical analysis of the most active fraction was performed.

The bioassay studies showed that S. sebiferum leaf extract exhibited antimicrobial activity against the four filamentous fungi, and the fourteen bacterial species tested. The activity was found to vary little in leaves collected from different locations, and it was found to be maintained even when the leaves were boiled prior to extraction. When the fungi were subjected to different exposure times and different concentrations of the extract, the activity was found to be both time- and concentration-dependent.
