This study examines how Aboriginal youth develop and apply leadership skills that sustain them in various life situations. The value of this research is the opportunity that it affords to understand how important self-awareness is for the youth in developing their leadership skills. Visual stimuli were used to facilitate the conversations and engage the youth in telling their stories. The motivation, momentum, and tenacity of Aboriginal youth who become empowered was explored in relation to leadership skills. Traditional ways of learning and healing through relationships, participation in cultural events, and the cultivation of Indigenous pride were examined as possible influences in growth and development. Another focus of the research was on understanding ways to support more Aboriginal youth in seeking leadership development opportunities. This process honours and celebrates the traditional ways of creating personal oral histories.
