In an ethnographic study of Salasaca, an indigenous Andean community, this dissertation focuses on the relationship between nationalism, historical consciousness, and literacy practices. The central question is: how have the Salasacas responded to nationalist history texts, including those currently taught in the state school system and other texts concerning the Salasacas' place of origin? In particular, how do the Salasacas understand the common blanco-mestizo idea that literacy's mnemonic qualities make written history more reliable than oral memory?

Drawing on methods developed in ethnographic studies of literacy, as well as the specific concept of "linguistic ideology," I seek answers to these questions in detailed analyses of Salasaca literacy practices and language beliefs. I show that the Salasacas primarily see literate mnemonics as a symbol of blanco-mestizo domination, a view most clearly manifested in their beliefs about the following: (1) a witch-saint's sorcery; (2) God's list of individual death dates; (3) Day-of-the-Dead lists of deceased relatives' names; and (4) comparisons between weaving and writing. Since the Ecuadorian state uses school history texts to promote national togetherness through emphasis on a shared past, I show that Salasaca distrust of literate mnemonics and historical texts weakens their sense of belonging to the Ecuadorian nation.

The dissertation contributes to previous studies of nationalism and historical consciousness by adding a sustained focus on the sociocultural configuration of literacy. This study also shows that literacy symbolism can be central to interethnic relations and subordinate groups' attempts to appropriate outsiders' power, complementing previous studies of South American devil pacts, millenarian beliefs, and origin myths, while helping to overcome an overall lack of attention to indigenous literacy. In general, this study furthers recent efforts to unite linguistic and social-structural approaches, showing that local beliefs about literacy are integral to ethnic and national identities.
