Have Korea's historically varied international relations and their influence on its domestic politics affected the content of its textbooks? To answer this question, this study has investigated Korean world history textbook treatments, from 1914 to the present, of four major historical events--the American Revolution, the Russian Revolution, the Chinese Communist Revolution, and the Japanese Meiji Restoration. It examined how these historical occurrences are treated in regard to (1) the amount of coverage allotted to them, (2) the evaluation of or attitude toward them, manifested in the language of the text, and (3) the interpretation or causal explanation of them.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study found that textbook content has, to some extent, reflected Korea's changing politics. In particular, the amount of coverage and the evaluation of events have more or less reflected political change, while interpretations of why events occurred have not drastically changed from period to period. However, considerable variation exists within periods. This pattern of variability indicates that the different political contexts have not always imposed a fixed amount of coverage or a uniform evaluation of a topic within a given period so as to create a noticeable variation between periods. In addition, the generalization that a positive relationship tends to influence accounts of the other country's history in a positive way does not always hold true. The different political contexts have sometimes not been as important as other factors, such as that of Korean nationalism in regard to treatments of the Meiji Restoration.

Such variations within periods and anomalies do not necessarily indicate that textbook authors are independent of outside influences. On the contrary, the overall slight coverage of topics and the qualification requirements for textbook authorization limit the possibility of authors expressing their own views or emphases. In any case, they have not made substantial changes in the interpretation of events. Most often, they have made superficial changes in rhetoric in accord with the prevailing political context. In this sense, it can be said that the textbook content has evolved from the prior or existing models without significant transformation. Perhaps textbook authors have tended to take the easier and safer path of imitating the existing model, instead of risking the creation of a new one, which would have to go through political screening procedures such as those required for government authorization.
