520 $a The cultural elements analyzed were classified under categories from Levno's (1978) cultural evaluation grid. The general categories were: The Family, The Social Sphere, The Political System and Institutions, The Environmental Sphere, and The Arts.
520 $a The cultural information of each textbook was catalogued under the different aspects of culture identified in the literature of the field for the purpose of studying both the quality and quantity of the culture presented in the textbooks.
520 $a The purpose of this study was to catalog the variety of cultural themes found in first-year high school Spanish textbooks, which contributed to an understanding of Hispanic culture.
520 $a Cultural elements in the textbooks referred to any written, illustrated, and photographic form which conveys a cultural message to the reader. The textbooks were selected from an approved list of the Georgia State Department of Education. The textbooks selected were: Nuestros Amigos by Harcourt B. Jovanovich, 1979; Churros y Chocolate by Scott, Foresman, & Co., 1984; Spanish for Mastery by D. C. Heath, 1984; and Espanol al Dia by D. C. Heath, 1985.
520 $a The findings of this study corroborate the concerns of the profession that the coverage of cultural elements in textbooks is deficiently presented. This deficiency is not only due to the absence of cultural explanations and corresponding illustrations, but to the lack of consistent thematic organization, improper selection of representative examples, and lack of spiral development of written and illustrative cultural material.
520 $a Perhaps the results of this study will help to motivate the profession to view culture teaching as an important subject, since culture teaching is often looked upon as something to be left to the discretion of individual teachers and something to be taught when students become bored, or for rainy days only.
