The objectives of this study are to analyze the contents of junior high school world geography texts, one from the United States and the other from Korea, and to compare the scope of each text.

Eight topical categories were developed from works of other researchers: Physical, Human, Political, Economic, Cultural, Global, Regional Geography, and Cartography. Each topical category includes both subdivisions and specific points. In the content analysis, nine analytical categories were used: coverage of topical categories; inclusion or omission of specific points; treatment of countries in Regional Geography, coverage of definitions of selected concepts, coverage of details of selected topics; coverage of selected locations and distributions; coverage of selected effects, relationships, and interactions; inclusion of additional concepts and points; and frequency and content of illustrations. The texts were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.

The results of this study indicate that the American text is superior in providing basic geographic information in terms of coverage of topical categories, details, concepts, relationships, additional points, and illustrations. The geographic information contained in the Korean text is insufficient, relative to the topical and analytical categories of this study. Therefore, the Korean world geography text could be strengthened by adding more geographical concepts, ideas, and relationships, more cultural perspective, a more interdisciplinary approach, more geographical skills, and more effective illustrations.

The findings of this study have relevance to textbook writers, publishers, and geography educators. Korean geography educators need to reconsider what criteria should be used for the selection of content, whether a text contains the fundamental body of ideas and concepts of geography, whether the information is current and relevant, what knowledge is of most worth in providing students with insight into their own world and identification of significant generalizations, skills, values, and attitudes. This study will provide a knowledge base which may be useful in improving the quality of the Korean geography text.
