Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2008.
This study examined the effect of acute exposure to whole body vibration (WBV) on performance during subsequent high-intensity cycle ergometry (CE). Twenty-seven subjects (13 males, 14 females) performed high-intensity CE following WBV warm up, low-intensity CE warm up or no warm up. Outcome measures included time-to-exhaustion (TTE), pulmonary gas exchange, heart rate, blood lactate concentration and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE). Data were analyzed using a two-way, repeated-measures ANOVA (p < 0.05). TTE was significantly increased and RPE was significantly lower following warm up with WBV and CE compared to no warm up. It was concluded that WBV warm up is as effective as CE warm up since both produced similar increases in performance compared to no warm up. WBV warm up may have the advantage of lower RPE during the first 3 minutes but individualized responses, adverse effects, and subject intolerance may limit its practical application.
