Inactivity among adolescents and adults in the US is a public health problem and is likely a contributing factor to the increasing rates of obesity among Americans. African Americans, particularly women, are at an increased risk of being inactive and overweight. The goal of this dissertation was to examine the familial determinants of overweight and physical activity behavior change for urban African American adolescents. Three research aims were articulated at the start of this study to achieve the overall goal.

First, familial aggregation of overweight was explored by examining the association between the weight status of mothers and their adolescent children using multiple indices of weight status (maternal self-report of weight status in adolescence, body mass index, and % body fat with adolescent BMI-for-age z-score and % body fat). Second, the relationships between both the current and prior (during adolescence) physical activity of mothers and the physical activity of their adolescent were examined. This was accomplished by directly comparing the activity of adolescents with the activity of their mothers (both recorded via accelerometry) and by comparing the activity of adolescents (recorded via accelerometry) with the activity of their mothers during adolescence (obtained via a retrospective physical activity questionnaire). Finally, the association between adolescent-perceived and mother-reported maternal support for physical activity and physical activity behavior change over ∼2 years was explored. This was accomplished by comparing the activity of adolescents (recorded via accelerometry) with both an adolescent- and mother-reported maternal support for physical activity score at three time points over ∼2 years.

Significant weight status and physical activity relationships were observed for mothers and their adolescent children (the physical activity relationship was influenced by the weight status of the adolescent). Additionally, a change in maternal support for physical activity was associated with a change in the physical activity of the adolescent over time. Finally, an intergenerational transmission of weight status, but not physical activity, was observed when examining the mother's weight status and physical activity during adolescence and that of her adolescent child.

Familial determinants of weight status and physical activity behavior change among low-income urban African American adolescents include maternal weight status, maternal support for physical activity, and mother's physical activity (for at-risk/overweight adolescents). Both clinical implications and implications for future obesity-prevention/physical activity-promotion interventions are described.
