Clinical tests of balance are often assumed to provide a "window" into underlying system impairments. This study investigated whether, and to what degree, sensory system impairments were associated with performance on a multidimensional balance scale designed to identify functional limitations in balance. Participants included 101 community-residing older adults (mean age = 76.9 years, SD = 5.8). Nine tests of sensory impairment and the Fullerton Advanced Balance (FAB) scale were administered to participants in a single testing session. Canonical correlation analysis revealed an overall significant multivariate relationship [Wilk's Lambda = .36, F (44, 300) = 2.13, p < .001]. The first correlation between the two sets of variables was Rc = .66, with 43 % overlapping variance. Significant associations (p < .05) were also evident for each of the impairments with one or more individual FAB test items. A moderate correlation (r = .61; 42% of total variance explained) was observed between the Sensory Organization Test (SOT) total score and the total FAB scale score. Weaker correlations were also evident for all other functional limitation test items. Post-hoc forward stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that sensory organization abilities best predicted overall performance on the FAB scale (r = .60; 36% of total variance explained) as well as 7 individual test items. These results suggest that the FAB scale does provide a "window" into sensory system impairment and can be used to guide clinical decisions about follow-up sensory system testing as well as specific intervention strategies.Subjects--Topical Terms:
