Design consultants and their business-oriented clients traditionally struggle with collaboration. Here I show that the key challenge lies in the fact that these two groups perceive risk differently. Specifically, business people avoid risk, while designers view it as essential to innovation. I propose that Knowledge Visualization (KV) can be used to help designers address uncertainties and moderate perceptions of risk. This study concludes with a set of five recommendations for use of KV in this context. The recommendations stem from five novel perspectives, offering a framework for strategic use of KV where business and design processes overlap. The objective of the framework is to help designers to apply KV in order to moderate feelings of uncertainty, exposure and risk in new clients.

An exploratory study was conducted, using semi-structured interviews with five practicing and experienced design professionals in order to gain a deeper understanding of the difficulties within the designer/client relationship. Through the analysis of the evidence two themes emerged: (a) the disciplinary differences between the two professions all manifest in a difference in perception of risk, and (b) this is exaggerated in new relationships with design-naive clients.

Exploration of the relationship shows that despite the troublesome differences there is evidence of an emergent common ground for designers and business types. Through investigations in the literature and in the field, I identify KV as an underutilized collaboration tool with significant potential to take advantage of this common ground and to moderate client perceptions of risk.
