Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2008.
This study is an exploration of the influence that mentors have on U.S. Army soldiers' career commitment and how it contributes to the future success of the Army. Currently the U.S. Army has 500,000 soldiers, and to sustain these numbers, the Army needs to attract 85,000 soldiers every year (Green, 2005). Many recruits do not stay after their current tour of duty, and this contributes to the lack of stability within the organization. The large turnover rates hurt the morale and prestige of the U.S. Armed Forces (Lee, 2000). This troubling attrition rate can be attributed to the current war on terrorism, social and cultural barriers, and the lack of inspiration. An effective Army mentorship program could help restore inspiration in its soldiers to extend their career commitment.
