Many claim to understand Adorno's cultural politics. Virtually all of them also claim that it failed. However, what actually failed are their attempts to understand his politics for the central issue, the legacy that is left to us, is not to understand his politics but rather to 'politic' as he understood it. Any political sociological study, if it hopes to acquiesce to the material, must be able to register this 'truth content'.

520 $a At Konigstein in the fall of 1929, two friends came together to agree upon a dialectical materialist philosophy that brought together the two poles of materialism and Jewish theology in an attempt to articulate a common cultural political programme. That project never really did take shape: where Benjamin left the two poles undialectically juxtaposed to each other, Adorno circumvented theology altogether in favour of aesthetics. This recourse to an aesthetic model is what ultimately derailed the original Konigstein draft.
520 $a The present essay, like Kierkegaard, applies the methodology outlined in the Trauerspiel study and that underlay the Konigstein talks; but rather than search for an aesthetic model in which a dialectical materialist philosophy may attain legitimate self-representation, it attempts instead to burn up the philosophical husk that is dialectical materialism so as to illuminate its theological remains. Insofar as the edifice of modern society is forged out of the ruins of a mythic past, an examination of the fragments encrypted in its sacred texts under the microscopic lens of materialism offers the possibility of revealing its material tendencies as a microcosm of past unredeemed actions while decoding the mark of a potentially emancipatory praxis. By restoring the possibility of a dialectical materialist philosophy but only as an immanent critique of theology, the redemption of Adorno's cultural politics becomes at the same time a rescue of Benjamin's theological pole from the abyss of forgetfulness.
