Thesis (M.A.)--Royal Roads University (Canada), 2009.
In today's turbulent world, healthcare is faced with unprecedented change, technological advances, and a cost-constrained environment. These complexities present a challenging leadership environment. To meet these challenges, this study examined how Vancouver Coastal Health could proactively build leadership and management capacity in the middle manager. The overarching objective was to provide a change management plan that would ensure that middle managers within the organization had the right skills, capabilities, and resources to take the organization forward. To achieve this, three hierarchical groups within the organization were sampled and qualitative data were gathered and analyzed. The study findings identified a need to determine leadership requirements, measure the capacity gap and build existing capacity in the middle manager. The study conclusions led to innovative recommendations that will provide new and unique opportunities for the organization to build leadership and management capacity for a sustainable future.
