Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Chicago, 2009.
The present research experimentally demonstrates the buyer's remorse phenomenon and explores its underlying processes. Seven experiments showed that people who relied on affect-based processing made higher pre-choice evaluations of products with better affective attributes. But, they gave lower post-choice evaluations of the same options. This effect was not observed among people who relied on deliberation-based processing to make choices in the first place. The experiments also suggest that such lowered post-choice evaluations are caused by the shift of processing modes: people who adopted an affect-based processing mode before making a choice tend to shift to a deliberation-based processing mode after they have made the choice, but people who adopted a deliberation-based processing mode before making a choice keep engaging in deliberation-based processing. Strategies for reducing buyer's remorse are discussed.
