This study examined 52 male participants enrolling in a partner abuse treatment program and their experience of feeling powerless. The participants' score of powerlessness, as measured by the Powerlessness Scale, which focuses on one's sense of being powerless or lack of personal efficacy, was also compared to their score on the Mastery Scale, which measures the extent to which an individual regards events under their control. This study examined a participant's powerlessness score and mastery score to its relationship of having experienced and witnessed family violence in one's childhood. The relationships between a participant's score on the powerlessness scale, mastery scale, and the family violence scale to the following demographic variables: age, race, education, and employment status were also explored. The results demonstrated the following: (1) Participants do not self-report experiencing statistically significant feelings of powerlessness or mastery. (2) A statistically significant inverse relationship exists between feelings of powerlessness and feelings of mastery. (3) No statistically significant relationship was detected between feelings of powerlessness and experienced family violence in childhood. (4) No significant relationships were detected between the demographic variables and the scores that the participants self-reported on the Powerlessness scale, Mastery scale, and Family Violence scale; however, one's education level does predict one's score on the Mastery scale.
