This study was conducted to investigate the occurrence of domestic violence within lesbian, intimate relationships. Domestic violence research has primarily been conducted within the context of the Euro-American, middle-class heterosexual relationship. However, researchers have begun to acknowledge the pervasiveness of domestic violence throughout all segments of society (Department of Justice, 2000; Tjaden & Thoennes, 2000). Research investigating domestic violence within same-gender intimate relationships has found the violence does occur at approximately the same rate found within heterosexual relationships and that the domestic violence tactics utilized are similar to those in heterosexual, intimate relationships (Brand & Kidd, 1986; Lobel, 1986; Loulan, 1986).Subjects--Topical Terms:

The conceptual framework utilized for this study was attachment theory. This theory describes how infants during their earliest development, become emotionally attached to their primary caregiver figures regardless of gender. As the result of these relationships, internal working models of intimate relationships are created which have been demonstrated to be influential throughout the lifespan.

Bivariate and multiple regression analysis was conducted. The results indicated a partial support of both hypothesis. Positive correlations were found between study participants' use of psychological and physical tactics and avoidance of intimacy. Their partners were found to utilize both psychological and physical tactics as the result of participants' avoidance. Additionally, both participants' and their partners utilized psychological tactics as the result of participants' anxiety.
