The present study investigated the contributions of dispositional optimism, social support, locus of control, and coping style to resilience to secondary traumatic stress disorder (STSD), depression, and anxiety among a sample of 85 mental health professionals. Results indicated that resilience to STSD, depression, and anxiety was related to a greater degree of optimism, more perceived family support, a more internal locus of control, less use of emotion-oriented coping, and greater use of social diversion coping. Greater use of task-oriented coping was associated with fewer symptoms of STSD. The predictor variables together explained 45% of the variance in STSD, with optimism and emotion-oriented coping contributing unique portions of the variance.

Thirty-one percent of participants (n = 26) were found to be experiencing STSD. In contrast, far fewer participants exhibited depression or anxiety; 87% of participants scored in the minimal range of depression, and 77% of respondents scored in the minimal range of anxiety. Participants who were older and who had more experience in their practices experienced fewer symptoms of STSD, and those with higher levels of education reported fewer symptoms of STSD and depression.

No differences in symptoms of STSD, depression, or anxiety were found between mental health professionals reporting a personal trauma history and those without such a history. Levels of exposure to clients, including those traumatized by events surrounding the terrorist attacks of 9/11/01, were not related to degree of symptomology of STSD, depression, or anxiety.

Findings of the present study suggest that some of the same psychosocial factors associated with resilience to PTSD in persons directly traumatized are also related to the resistance of STSD in mental health professionals. Additional research is needed in order to add to our understanding of these relationships and to assist clinicians in identifying at-risk groups and developing treatment and prevention strategies.
