This study explores the interaction of coping strategies, negative life events and health locus of control on the adjustment to pain for those persons with osteoarthritis. Locus of control, or an individual's personal sense of mastery, manifests itself in two basic forms of beliefs: internal and external. Julian Rotter is noted for developing the initial construct of locus of control based on different aspects of social learning (Banaji & Prentice, 1994; Steptoe & Wardle, 2001). Literature also supports the theory that there is a relationship between locus of control and level of both physical and mental health, leading to the development of the health locus of control construct (HLOC). As well, a relationship exists between a person's locus of orientation and his or her level of depression (Wagner et al., 2001). Furthermore, locus of control, physical health and mental health are intimately related in creating the foundations upon which those patients with chronic pain cope with their conditions (Rybarczyk et al., 2000). In this study, the assessment of persons with osteoarthritis did not support many of the hypotheses; however, some promising results were found. For example, there was a fairly large difference in average depression scores for males and females. Also, correlations were found between ability to handle stress and participation in daily activities. Although this study involved a small sample size, the results should provide other researchers with a place to start future investigations of pain management.
