Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Memphis, 2002.
Research has demonstrated that the culture-bound messages women receive about the female body can encourage, to varying degrees, a woman's internalization of an observer's perspective of her body (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997). This internalization has been referred to as "self-objectification" and this study examined whether a woman's self-objectification is related to her depressive symptoms and whether her experience of body shame and locus of control regarding body image mediates the self-objectification---depression relation. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to address the research questions. Self-objectification was not predictive of depressive symptoms. Given that no relationship was established between self-objectification and depressive symptoms, the mediating relationships of both body shame and locus of control were not found. However, both body shame and locus of control accounted for significant amounts of variance in the measure of depressive symptoms.
