The study sought to establish any relationship among the following variables: Health Related Hardiness (HRH), Health Locus of Control (HLOC), Stigma, Gender, Ethnic/Racial Background, and Immune Function in adults with HIV/AIDS. Data was collected using a questionnaire comprised of the Health Related Hardiness Scale, the Health Locus of Control Scale (form 'C'), and the Stigma Scale. Tcell count was the measure of immune system function. Subjects were 106 HIV+ adults receiving services at one of three HIV/AIDS service agencies in the greater Tampa Bay area of Florida. A random sample of clients at these agencies were identified for participation in the study.

Findings of the study reveal no significant relationship between HRH scores and immune function, and no significant relationship between HLOC scores and immune function. There were no significant differences in immune function due to gender or ethnic/racial background. HRH scores and HLOC scores were found to be positively related, and both were found to be negatively related to Stigma scores. Of particular interest were the findings regarding women and the Native American group of subjects. These findings point to the need for further research with these groups and question the appropriateness of the instruments used.
