This study explored the impact of having a history of physical, emotional, or sexual abuse history on individuals with chronic pain. Specific questions of interest were, (1) Does a history of abuse and non-abuse result in differential self-report scores for pain perception and functional abilities pre and post treatment for chronic pain and (2) How do coping, locus of control, and psychological distress scores vary pre and post treatment for patents with histories of abuse and non-abuse.

520 $a The investigator employed an ex post facto research design that tested specific hypotheses using an ANOVA with one repeated measures design. The subjects were 69 outpatients at a chronic pain treatment center. The subjects had various diagnoses and were treated medically according to individual needs. The subjects were asked to complete questionnaires pre and post treatment intervention that assessed (a) self-report perception of pain severity, (b) self-report functional status rating, (c) psychological distress scores on the BSI, (d) coping scores on the WCQ, and (e) locus of control as measured by the MHLC.
520 $a No significant differences were found between the abuse and non-abuse groups on self-report pain severity, self-report functional status, psychological distress, locus of control, or coping measures. There was, however, a trend showing the abuse history group as having slightly higher psychological distress, slightly more external locus of control, and slightly more maladaptive coping. Both groups scored very high on psychological distress, which may indicate that the experience of having an abuse history is as equally as detrimental as living with the experience of chronic pain.
