The purpose of the this study is to try to predict, by means of their test results, whether HIV positive individuals would be likely to stay in ongoing treatment and to comply with their doctors, or to terminate after the first few visits. The participants were patients of a comprehensive treatment center for HIV. The sample consisted of 64 patients. The number of months of known HIV status ranged from 1--6. The sample was comprised of 89% gay Caucasian males, 5% African American Gay Males, and 6% Latino Gay Males. These individuals were referred upon their entry into the clinic and all had the knowledge that they had been infected with HIV. The subjects were given a series of screening tests upon their second visit consisting of Balanced Inventory of Directed Responses, Hassles Scale, Beck Depression Inventory, State Trait Anger Expression Inventory, State Trait Anxiety Inventory, C.O.P.E., Millon Behavioral Health Inventory (MBHI), and the Rotters Locus of Control Inventory. A scale measuring, attitudes toward Compliance was developed from the MBHI. Test results indicated that there were no significant correlations between these tests and the measure of compliance in all scales with the exception of Cooperation, Respectful, Gastro Susceptibility, and Forceful scales of the MBHI, suggesting that compliance may be in a large part due to the individual's character, rather than relating specifically to HIV.
