This study examined the independent and combined effects of time since injury, health locus of control beliefs and coping strategies on the quality of life of individuals with spinal cord injuries. The following research questions were addressed: (1) Does time since injury significantly contribute to the prediction of quality of life after spinal cord injury? (2) Does the type of coping strategies used significantly contribute to the prediction of quality of life after spinal cord injury? (3) Does the type of health locus of control beliefs held significantly contribute to the prediction of quality of life after spinal cord injury? (4) Is there an interaction between time since injury and coping strategies which significantly contributes to quality of life after spinal cord injury? (5) Is there an interaction between time since injury and health locus of control beliefs that significantly contributes to quality of life after spinal cord injury? (6) Is there an interaction between health locus of control beliefs and coping strategies that significantly contributes to quality of life after spinal cord injury?

The Internet was used to recruit participants. Ninety-eight individuals with spinal cord injuries completed the Life Situation Survey (Chubon, 1995), The Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (Wallston & Wallston, 1978) and the Ways of Coping Questionnaire (Folkman & Lazarus, 1988). Data were analyzed using multiple regression analysis and ANOVA's for planned comparisons. The results are consistent with previous studies and suggest that two types of health locus of control beliefs, powerful others (PELC) and internal (IHLC), do significantly contribute to the variation in quality of life among individuals with spinal cord injuries. The results also imply a relationship between two types of coping strategies, Escape-Avoidance and Positive Reappraisal, and quality of life. Time since injury was not found to predict quality of life. The data also failed to support the existence of significant interactions effects between the predictor variables.
