Additional knowledge about life satisfaction has many practical applications, especially in the field of counseling. Numerous factors have been linked to life satisfaction. The purpose of this study was to narrow the search for correlates of life satisfaction. A review of the literature on life satisfaction, locus of control, and imagery suggest that these variables may be interrelated. This study, therefore, examined the relationships among life satisfaction, locus of control and imagery.

The sample (N = 152) consisted of college freshmen from one midwestern university. Subjects completed the Rotter Internal-External Locus of Control Scale, the Betts QMI Vividness of Imagery Scale, Gordon's Test of Visual Imagery Control, and the Satisfaction With Life Scale in one session. Locus of control, vividness of imagery, and control of imagery were tested for their predictability of life satisfaction.

Multiple regression analyses confirmed locus of control as a predictor of life satisfaction. Controllability of imagery was established as a new and additive predictor of life satisfaction. A second regression analysis examined the interactions among locus of control, vividness of imagery, and control of imagery as predictors of life satisfaction. This hypothesis was not supported.

Results of the multiple regression analyses were in the direction expected. Subjects with greater internal locus of control and greater control of imagery had greater life satisfaction. The significance of these findings does not suggest a large effect size, so that major immediate applications do not evolve from these significant findings as a result.

The significant results of this study do add to the knowledge about life satisfaction and suggest the need for further research. The finding that control of imagery increases the predictability of life satisfaction might suggest that guided imagery in particular might need more study to determine if the purposeful use of imagery might produce greater effects on life satisfaction.
