Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women in the U.S. and is second to lung cancer in the leading causes of cancer-related deaths. One of the key psychosocial consequences of breast cancer is a negative body image, especially after breast cancer surgery and treatment. Women's perceptions and attitudes towards their bodies' appearance and health are associated with psychological adjustment to breast cancer; hence, body image has become an important outcome variable in breast cancer surgical comparisons and psychological adjustment research (Hopwood, 1993; Mock, 1993; Moyer, 1997).

In the present study, body image was examined in relationship to health locus of control (HLC), self-responsibility for recovery from cancer, fighting spirit, mood, and health behaviors, particularly exercise and cancer screening behaviors. HLC, fighting spirit, and self-responsibility for recovery are important components of women's health-related and self-efficacy beliefs; these beliefs influence health behaviors that affect women's health status (Wallston, 1992). Recommendations for health-promoting behaviors to prevent cancer are well-known; however, less is known about what breast cancer survivors do to maintain their health. (Reardon & Aydin, 1993).

A sample of 89 self-selected, well educated, Caucasian women between 31-79 years of age completed a self-administered mail-out questionnaire. Participants were one to five years post-medical treatment for early stage breast cancer (stage I and II). Data were collected with the following instruments: (a) a socio-demographic questionnaire, (b) Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC), Form C, (c) Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale (Mini-MAC), (d) Profile of Mood States (POMS), (e) Health Behavior Questionnaire (HBQ), and (f) Multidimensional Body-Self in Relation Questionnaire (MBSRQ).

Results indicated positive relationships between exercise and physical functioning and specific aspects of body image, namely Fitness Orientation and Fitness Evaluation. Exercise and physical functioning were also positively associated with Health Orientation and Evaluation, respectively. Exercisers reported higher scores on body image subscales (Fitness Orientation and Evaluation) than non-exercisers. No significant group differences were found regarding mood, HLC, fighting spirit, or self-responsibility for recovery.

Relationships were examined through correlational and predictive analyses. A meaningful pattern of relationships was observed. This study provides a new way of conceptualizing psychological adjustment to breast cancer. The hypothesized relationships were largely supported.
