The purpose of this study was to add to the existing literature on HIV positive mothers of young children. Very few empirical studies have been done which focus on the life situations and emotional well being of this group of women. HIV infection is increasing among women and those most often affected are ethnic minority women of childbearing age.

In the present study, 59 women were interviewed and the data from 54 was used for statistical analysis. Structured interviews were used to gather demographic data including information about the women's health status and Time Since Diagnosis. Then standardized instruments were used to assess Depression, Anxiety, stressful experiences, Social Support, beliefs about control over HIV infection, and pro-social coping styles. Participants also answered open ended questions about how they had responded over time to their HIV diagnosis and about their concerns as mothers.

It was anticipated that when stress and health status were held constant, Social Support beliefs about control over HIV infection, pro-social coping styles, and Time Since Diagnosis would be predictive of Anxiety and Depression. The results of the investigation failed to support these predictions for Depression. They were partially supported in relation to Anxiety for one type of social support and beliefs about Personal Control of Overall Health.
