Thesis (Ph.D.)--Kent State University, 1996.
The Tri-Axial Model of Coping proposes that coping behavior varies along three co-existent dimensions: (1) activity, (2) sociability, and (3) directness. Model and measurement development was assessed for three samples, two undergraduate student samples and a sample of inner-city, low-income individuals. This work attempted to extend the prior investigation of the first two axes of the model. In particular, the applicability of the model to both men and women, and to both African- and European-Americans was examined. In addition, the relationship between perceived control and strategy choice was tested. Finally, the relationship between coping strategy and psychological well-being, specifically depression, was assessed. The data lent moderate support to the Tri-Axial Model of Coping, and suggest that the Strategic Approach to Coping Scale is a reliable instrument on all three participant samples.
