Purpose. Research has indicated that hardy individuals tolerate stress more than nonhardy personality types. It is reported that this lower level of stress contributes to fewer reported physical illnesses for hardy personality types than for nonhardy individuals.

The study was undertaken to determine: (a) if there were significant differences between hardy and nonhardy personality types on five variables: internal health locus of control, chance health locus of control, powerful others health locus of control, state anxiety, and trait anxiety, and (b) which of these variables (mentioned above) describe the hardy and nonhardy personality types.

Procedure. Subjects $(N = 356)$ were administered three paper and pencil inventories: the Personal Views survey, Multidimensional Health Locus of Control, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory. The two groups studied were hardy and nonhardy personality types. The upper 27% of the total composite scores of the Personal Views Survey identified the hardy group $(n = 109)$ and the lower 27% of the total composite scores of the Personal Views Survey identified the nonhardy group $(n = 104).$ To find significant differences between hardy and nonhardy personality type groups, the scores on the Multidimensional Health Locus of Control scales (Internal, Chance, and Powerful Others) and the State and Trait subscales of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory were analyzed using t-tests. To determine which variables (mentioned above) most accurately described each of the two groups (hardy and nonhardy), a discriminant function analysis was performed.

Results. The two groups (hardy and nonhardy) differed significantly on four of the five variables (chance health locus of control, powerful others health locus of control, and state and trait anxiety). The two groups did not differ on internal locus of control. Two out of the five variables (chance health locus of control and trait anxiety) significantly predicted membership in hardy and nonhardy groups.

Conclusion. The hardiness construct is further defined by such variables as health locus of control orientation and anxiety. The findings in this study are relevant in that they facilitate programs designed by health psychologists, in which the purpose(s) is to prevent psychological stress and/or physical illness.
