The study found that most of the participants had no formal sex education and did not learn about condoms until they became infected with STDs or HIV. They did not use condoms when under the influence of alcohol, and they appreciated partners who asked them to use condoms. There continues to be a need for additional education regarding HIV prevention and transmission and proper condom use. Future research is needed with a focus on HIV-positive women and Latino teens.
