Amateurs participate in competitions in order to display and improve their skills and receive constructive feedback on their performances. The problem prompting this study was the apparent lack of consistency, accuracy, feedback efficiency, and timeliness of the judging and scoring of amateur competitive events that dilutes the effectiveness of the feedback. The purpose of this study was to investigate some of the inadequacies of the scoring and judging processes of a specific amateur competitive event, the Florida Bandmasters Association Solo and Ensemble Contest. The theoretical foundations of this study were based on correlation and comparison theory. This mixed methods study used a qualitative phenomenological design and a quantitative survey research design. Ten members of a high school band responded to a survey designed by the researcher. The key research questions in this study solicited High School A's band members' responses on the effectiveness of the traditional feedback method in this event and compared it to a proposed adjudication model. Data collected in the survey was analyzed using Pareto analysis. The results of the study indicated that 70 percent of the participants preferred their performance feedback in a quantitative adjudication format. Recommendations were to develop the quantitative adjudication format into a system whereby information technology could provide assistance in the feedback processes by enhancing the timeliness, accuracy, and understanding of the feedback. Providing valuable and timely feedback to improve skills, encouraging continued participation in these events, and developing such attributes as self-improvement, self-discipline, and self-esteem were positive social changes expected as a result from this work.
