The purpose of this study was to contribute to the social capital literature by conducting an inductive examination of how the construct is manifest by individuals in communities. This research aimed to address some of the questions and concerns around definition and measurement by examining how the construct was defined and experienced by 14 participants who contributed to the social capital stock in Kansas City, Kansas (KCK). Participant and non-participant observation, in-depth interviewing, artifact collection and community mapping over a 13-month period were used to explore the experience of social capital investment.

Of the three concepts focused on most closely in this study, social norms, social networks, and reciprocity/trust, reciprocity/trust was the one that yielded the most surprising finding. Contrary to expectations and previous literature, trust was not critical to social capital investments. Instead, mistrust was more often a driving force in participants' decisions to become involved in community activities. The importance of social norms to the social capital experience was when studying how social capital investment manifests within diverse neighborhoods. Although not as clear as findings on social norms, the research confirmed the importance of social networks in the generation and maintenance of social capital investments, with bonding social capital being the most evident.

Similar to the argument made by Onyx and Bullen (2001), this study supported the notion that social capital is a complex construct that likely looks slightly different and contains somewhat different ingredients depending on the social, economic, political and cultural context of the community in which it occurs. In addition, this research pointed to the importance of considering the special challenges to social capital investment encountered by those who live in diverse communities.
