Thesis (D.B.A.)--Boston University, 2007.
This dissertation investigates the sociology of corporate entrepreneurship (CE). Specifically, it analyzes interlocking corporate board ties among S&P500 companies and patterns of CE investment between 1996 and 2006. Applying Resource Dependency Theory (Pfeffer and Salancik, 1978) and Structural Hole Theory (Burt, 1992), the three-paper set explores if information obtained through interlocking board ties is a resource for CE, defined as organizational risk-taking, proactiveness, and innovativeness (Miller, 1983; Dess and Lumpkin, 1996). Collectively, the findings present a strong challenge to the current articulation of Structural Hole Theory, particularly assumptions about how firm positions in interorganizational networks should impact firm-level entrepreneurship (Burt, 1992). Contributing to a greater understanding of the sociology of entrepreneurship, the results show that a firm's position in its network of interlocking boards can shape its risk-taking, its access to information about entrepreneurial opportunities, as well as its ability to obtain critical information about CE practices.
