Thesis (M.A.)--University of Houston, 2008.
The aesthetic significance of the sublime was not fully appreciated until the advent of the eighteenth century when English aestheticians contributed a wealth of material to its explication. In what follows I examine the premier treatise of the eighteenth century explosion of interest in the sublime, Edmund Burke's Philosophical Enquiry (1757), as well as Immanuel Kant's distillation of eighteenth century theories found in his Critique of Judgment (1790). I then examine the Romantic reaction to Kant's theory and how conceptions of sublimity were modified in the nineteenth century. In order to illustrate these changes I analyze representative works of Romantic poetry and painting from Wordsworth and Coleridge as well as Turner and Friedrich. Finally, I examine the role of the sublime in Jungian analytical psychology and its relation to the uncanny. I conclude that the sublime is an enduring fixture of mental life, necessary for personal growth and collective change.
