This study was motivated by the need to address the knowledge gaps on the relative impacts of demographic aging on the transportation system along two major concerns. First, empirical studies that look into the travel needs and behaviour of the elderly are growing but are still few and tentative to inform policy. Second, while there has been a greater international recognition and commitment towards improving mobility in the context of an aging society, these have yet to be made explicit in policy documents and translated into programs and investments of national and regional bodies of governments.

Overall, the three studies presented in this dissertation contributed to policy discourses and the advancement of geographic theory and methods in the study of aging and transportation. With respect to policy contribution, cumulatively the three studies have proposed a policy framing of the relationship between demographic aging and transportation beyond the elderly-disability discourse to one that advances active aging hand-in-hand with sustainable transportation. In addition, the research proposed a number of specific policy areas affecting elderly mobility that essentially mainstreams population aging in the major transport policy agenda. This research also made theoretical contribution by advancing Hagerstrand's time-space framework in aging issues and the use of multilevel analysis to geographic studies. To our knowledge, this is the first time that such theoretical and methodological approach in transport geography has been applied to guide empirical analysis and interpretation of travel outcomes of the elderly population.
