Thesis (D.Phil.)--University of Sussex (United Kingdom), 1983.
Varese's own published writings and lectures on his music provide detailed information on only limited aspects of his compositions. His descriptions of form and process are explicit and therefore helpful in formulating a practical analytical approach; however, descriptions of the technical aspects of his musical language (pitch organization and structural elements) are not represented in any of these writings. The reasons for this appear to be related to the composer's use of different pitch organization principles for each work (and even within certain works), and his use of a consistent compositional approach to process and form throughout all of these works. These latter two aspects therefore provide criteria for identifying compositional elements, and explain how these elements are developed and formally arranged in each work.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The aim of this dissertation is to expound Varese's systems of pitch organization, and the structural elements that are derived from each system. This investigation is channelled into three broad areas: pitch class organization, intervallic structure, and registral organization. Through a detailed study of these three areas, the formulation, development, and formal organization of structural elements are examined in each of the following works: Ameriques, Offrandes, Hyperprism, Integrales, Ecuatorial, Density 21.5, Deserts, and Nocturnal.
