Many factors affect the quality and feeding value of corn silage in lactating dairy cattle. These include the growing season, corn hybrid, level fed in the diet and particle size.

Corn silages from two different growing seasons were analyzed for their nutrient components and in vitro digestibilities. Corn grown in cool and wet conditions resulted in silage with less grain and more stover than silages from corn grown in hot and dry conditions. While amount of grain is an important determinant of quality, in vitro digestibility may not be affected by grain amount.

Effect of diets containing one of three corn hybrids (leafy, high grain, or generic blend) was compared in lactating dairy cattle. Diets contained 40% (DM basis) corn silage. No effect of corn hybrid diet was found for DMI, milk yield or components, or diet digestibility. Although cows on the three diets performed similarly, use of the generic hybrid is not advocated as this product may vary from year to year.

Five dietary levels of NDF from forage (18, 20, 22, 24 and 26%) were compared. To achieve these varying levels, corn silage in the diet was increased, corn grain was decreased, and alfalfa hay remained constant. Dry matter intake decreased with increasing NDF from forage concentration in multiparous cows but not in primiparous cows. Dietary treatment did not affect milk production, BW, BCS, or digestibility, but did affect time spent chewing per kg DM in both parities.

Corn was harvested at two theoretical lengths of chop to determine the effect of chop length on dairy cattle performance. Treatment diets contained 40% of the diet DM as either long-chop (L) or short-chop (S) silage. Cows consuming treatment S had a tendency to consume more DM than cows consuming diet L and milk yield or components did not differ. Dry matter digestibility was numerically higher for cows on diet L compared to those on S. Nadir of rumen pH was lower for diet S than for diet L. Trends suggest differences in the way the rumen utilizes silages differing in chop lengths.
