Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Texas at Austin, 1995.
Alice Miel, one of the foremost female contributors to the American curriculum field and a leader of the "second generation" of curriculum development scholars, has frequently been overlooked in much of the research on the nature and evolution of curriculum development. One of only a handful of doctoral students supervised by Hollis Caswell at Teachers College, Miel went on to prominence as a professor there from 1944 until her retirement in 1971. Her teaching and writings focused on curriculum development and change in local schools (e.g., Cooperative Procedures in Learning, 1952; Changing the Curriculum: A Social Process, 1946); and social studies and children's democratic social learning (More Than Social Studies: A View of Social Learning in the Elementary School, 1957; Children's Social Learning, 1958). She was also involved in the cooperative action research movement of the 1950s and 1960s.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Besides her research contributions, Miel's service to the curriculum field was distinguished. She was one of the early presidents of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (1953-54); she succeeded Caswell, her mentor, and preceeded William Alexander and Galen Saylor, her classmates at Teachers College, in this role. She also edited ASCD's first Yearbook. In the 1970s, she became a guiding influence in the founding of the World Council on Curriculum and Instruction (WCCI), serving as this group's first president. The establishment of the WCCI was a natural outgrowth of her work with doctoral students from all over the world. In addition, she played an active part in the Association for Childhood Education, International, for several years.

This dissertation is a biographical study in curriculum history. As historical research, this work makes use of oral history, archival materials, and the writings of Miel and others in curriculum development in order to trace and interpret Miel's career and contributions to the field. The study explores her public school teaching career in the Michigan schools; her early research collaboration (Democracy in School Administration, 1943) with G. Robert Koopman, the principal of the Michigan junior high school in which she taught, and Paul Misner, superintendent of the Glencoe (IL) public schools; her doctoral studies at Teachers College with Caswell; her major writings on general principles of curriculum development and on social studies education; her career in academia and her work with numerous doctoral students who later distinguished themselves in the curriculum field; and her curriculum work with local schools.

Most importantly, this study relates Miel's contributions to the larger context of educational and curriculum history. Through an examination of secondary historical works by Cremin, Kliebard, Zilversmit, Tanner and Tanner, Seguel, and others, the paper explores Miel's role in the evolving stories of Teachers College, the progressive education movement after World War Two, and the changing nature of the curriculum field itself.
