Thesis (Ph.D.)--Seattle Pacific University, 2007.
Much research has focused on using the Clinical Scales of the MMPI or MMPI-2 to predict outcomes in persons with chronic pain or mild brain injury. Unfortunately, in recent years, these scales have become less widely used and less relied upon for their prognostic value, partly because of the heterogeneity of scale content. The Restructured Clinical (RC) Scales, part of the latest revision of the MMPI-2, may be an improvement from the standpoint of content homogeneity, and their apparent ability to sort out valid somatic symptoms from other psychological constructs such as anxiety, depression, and/or demoralization. In this study, the researcher examines the Demoralization Scale of the RC Scales as a predictor of rehabilitation and self-reported functional outcomes compared to the RC scales RC1, RC2 and RC3 in combination. The ability of the new Restructured Clinical Scales to predict rehabilitation outcomes is compared to the Clinical Scales. The moderating effects of rehabilitation interventions are studied and the profiles of diagnosis groups for similarities in scores on the Restructured Scales of the MMPI-2 are evaluated. There were 140 participants in the study selected from a neuropsychological practice. Besides the MMPI-2, the Medical Outcomes Study Short-Form 36-Item Health Survey (SF-36), and Rehabilitation Outcome Algorithms are utilized. Demoralization was found to be a better predictor of outcomes in most cases than other MMPI-2 Restructured Scales, the number of rehabilitation services moderated role-physical on the SF-36 and there were similarities of scores on the MMPI-2 Restructured Clinical Scales between the diagnosis groups.
