Most academics and practitioners regard preparation as a stage of great importance in the negotiation process. However, the literature proposes few theoretical conceptualization of collective bargaining preparation. Because of the normative importance attached to this stage of collective bargaining process and the lack of theoretical knowledge on this matter, we judged relevant to devote our thesis to the search of a better comprehension of collective bargaining preparation and more particularly, the employer's one. We thus sought to know what are the attributes of employer collective bargaining preparation and the effect of the explanatory variables on the variation of its importance.

In order to achieve this goal, we worked out a conceptualization of the employer preparation, rising at the same time from elements proposed in the literature and a deductive process whose theoretical bases emanate from collective bargaining strategic models. Employer preparation conceptualization proposed comprises 3 dimensions (technical, political and synoptic) of which each one includes lour components. The construct was consolidated thereafter following three case studies for finally being tested from a sample of the population of Quebec's unionized organizations. 232 valid questionnaires were used to collect the data which allowed the verification of assumptions of research.

Univariate analysis results reveal that employer collective bargaining preparation activities associated to the twelve components of our conceptualization are present in an effective way in the preparation of the surveyed organizations. The aggregate results of the various activities associated with each dimension of the construct indicated that it is those attached to political dimension which are considered as being most important by the surveyed organizations, followed in the order by those of synoptic dimension and technical dimension.

Multivariate analysis allowed us to identify thirteen explanatory variables in the variation of global preparation or its dimensions. For this purpose, it is observed that the variables numbers of employees, training in collective bargaining, representativeness, resource, beginning of the negotiations, integrative, distributive, general strategy and human resources strategy influence in a positive way the importance of the preparation of the employer, the variables sex, seniority and sales turnover negatively influence the importance of this same preparation and the globalized sales turnover rather brings a curved influence ("n" shaped) on this one. It is also noted that the analysis model proposed in the thesis generate an adjusted R2 explaining 35,3% of the variation of the importance of the global preparation.

Although certain assumptions could not be sustained at the end of our analyses, our results enables us, nevertheless, to note the relevance of the conceptualization of the preparation of the employer and the explanatory potential of almost all of the independent variables retained in the analysis model. We can consequently affirm that our research contributes an innovative and important share to the knowledge in labor relations and more particularly to the field of collective bargaining theory while proposing, for the first time to our knowledge, an empirical portrait of the effective preparation of Quebec's unionized organizations and the impact of the factors influencing the importance of their preparation to the collective bargaining as well.
