The specific aims of this study were to: (1) validate the psychometric properties of existing standardized instruments with Chinese patients experiencing cancer pain; (2) elucidate the perceived meanings of cancer pain for Chinese patients; (3) examine the relationship between perceived meanings of cancer pain and emotional responses; (4) identify the intrapersonal, environmental and disease-related factors influencing the meanings ascribed by the Chinese patients. A convenience sample of 85 participants was recruited from the Beijing Cancer Hospital in China. The inclusion criteria were: (1) Chinese patients who were born in mainland China; (2) patients who were able to speak and read in Chinese; (3) patients who were experiencing cancer pain and had self-reported cancer pain in the past week; (4) patients who were 18 years or older; (5) patients who were fully conscious and able to communicate; (6) patients who were aware of his/her diagnosis. The exclusion criteria excluded subjects who were born in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau, were experiencing non-cancer pain that can not be distinguished from cancer pain or pain with unknown cause, and were unable to sign the consent form. Four instruments were used: (1) the Perceived Meanings of Cancer Pain Inventory; (2) the Profile of Mood States-short form; (3) Brief Pain Inventory-short form; and (4) patient information form. SPSS for windows software package and the SAS software package were used to conduct data analysis.
