Thesis (M.S.)--University of South Alabama, 2009.
Self-report data has indicated that journalists are much more likely than the American public to report a liberal political ideology and identify with the Democratic Party. In the present study, political surveys were administered to undergraduate college students majoring in journalism (n = 42) and college students not majoring in journalism (n = 42). Survey data from the journalism students was also used in comparison with pre-existing survey data from professional journalists and the US public. The primary purpose of the study was to determine if the views common to journalists are formed before or after entering the field of professional journalism. Results indicate that responses from journalism and non journalism students differed in only 1 of 13 items used to compare the groups, but responses from journalism students and professional journalists differed in 2 of the 5 comparisons between the groups. The primary implication of this study appears to be that many of the political views common to journalists are formed after college.
