The question driving this paper asks whether philosophical practitioners should be expected to have at least a minimal amount of education and training in mental health and its diagnostics, given none is currently required. Furthermore, the lack of any expected licensing and monitoring of philosophical practitioners as well as no agreed upon ethical canon and common standards of proven knowledge prior to receiving permission to practice leaves the practitioners without any oversight or protection for themselves or their client. The resulting need of protection for both the philosophical practitioner and his or her clients suggests that the discipline needs to consider ways to manage oversight and address educational issues including counseling skills as a measure of security for themselves and their clients.
