The modes of Literary Criticism possess a unifying psychological principle. Each mode of criticism analyzes symbols and their comic or tragic tones. The symbol unites all modes of literary criticism, and its nature is purely psychological. Each mode of criticism can be described in terms of its approach to symbols. The principles and nature of the unconscious generate symbols to bring unconscious material to conscious awareness. Northrup Frye's literary modes are analyzed according to the principles of psychoanalysis and analytical psychology to formulate a more integrated criticism, Analytical Criticism. Alice in Wonderland is utilized as a case study to demonstrate the potential of Analytical Criticism to unite the modes of literary criticism. The result is a greater fundamental understanding of the literary process than is presented by any of the disparate modes.
