Thesis (M.A.)--Regent University, 2008.
This study describes the growth and radicalization of Salafi Islam in Europe through the lens of political psychology via various psychosociological concepts of identity. The saliency of moral identity is theorized as a key instigating component in the growth of the extremist Salafi Islamist movement in Europe. Moral identity is the primary identity for extremist Islamists due to a complex interplay between individual needs, specific contexts, and identity features. The psychological concept of moral identity is defined and delineated through its development from individual, group, and, ultimately, moral identities. The relevant supporting theories are briefly highlighted, as are the individual needs of and identity variables available to extremist Islamists. As the primary religious ideology of many extremist Islamists based in Europe, Salafi Islam is the basis for the religious ideology of this paper's theorization. The globalized, secularized, and modernized European social environment is emphasized as the contextual foundation in which the saliency and thus radicalization of this Islamist extremist moral identity occurs. Finally, a recommendation is made for a dialogical moral identity based on Euro-Islam, as opposed to Salafi extremist Islamism, to better coexist with the challenges of modern Europe.
