Thesis (M.S.N.)--Northern Kentucky University, 2008.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services set a national goal in the Healthy People 2010 document to increase the proportion of infants who are breastfed in the immediate postpartum period to 75%; in the first six months to 50%; and to one year to 25%. One of the barriers to breastfeeding continuation was the lack of support from the significant other/father of the baby. This phenomenological study explored four mothers' feelings about fathers and their involvement and support in the process of breastfeeding. The theoretical framework that guided the research was Orem's theory of self-care and feminist theory. Data were collected using unstructured interviews with four mothers who had breastfed for varying lengths of duration. The theory that mothers had to carry more was discovered. The background meaning identified was mothers carry more and shared situational meanings identified were: (a) we are going to do this, (b) needing to step up, (c) relating to the baby, (d) letting him down and it was a stressful time for him, and (e) feeling left out and backing off.
