Thesis (M.S.)--Mount Sinai School of Medicine of New York University, 2008.
The unintentional discovery is misattributed paternity is occasionally found through genetic testing of family members for a genetic disease. Geneticists and genetic counselors most often do not tell the husband of the finding of non-paternity, in order to protect the family unit. This study sought the opinions of the non-medical community on this subject. The results showed that slightly over half of respondents reported that they would like both parents to be informed should their family ever be in this situation, and 41% reported that they would like the mother only to be informed. Demographics rarely correlated or predicted subjects' answers to survey questions. However, beliefs regarding the family unit and how genetic information should be used correlated highly with how subjects think the situation should be handled. This study highlights a potential discrepancy between what is commonly done in practice and what the patient population may want.
