Relapse prevention is an essential component of any recovery program, particularly for those trying to overcome addiction. This study investigated the use of evidence-based relapse prevention techniques at chemical dependency treatment centers in California. A survey was administered to the clinical directors of 242 treatment facilities in which they were asked to self-rate their familiarity with and use of relapse prevention approaches, identified in the clinical and empirical literature. The majority of participants reported being very familiar with the techniques, strategies, and procedures of coping skills training, marriage/relationship therapy, teaching patients to recognize "high-risk" situations, monitoring patients' self-efficacy, group therapy, individual therapy, 12-step programs, and assessing treatment goals of abstinence vs. harm reduction. Participants reported some familiarity with medication, meditation, and cue exposure therapy and no familiarity with acupuncture. Coping skills training, teaching patients to recognize "high-risk" situations, monitoring patients' self-efficacy, group therapy, and twelve-step programs are used on a daily basis.

This research suggests that there is familiarity with evidence-based relapse prevention techniques. There is also widespread use of these techniques with the exception of medication and cue exposure therapy. Enhanced training may increase the use of these evidence-based strategies in treatment. Further research is required to ascertain the effectiveness of these procedures as performed in these settings.
